I'm very excited to tell you about my author visits which will feature charts as you've never seen them before!
I offer an interactive author talk and three different workshops - details below.
I am also available for library and bookshop events, and festivals, and can tailor talks/activities to suit.
If you would like to enquire about an author visit, or have any questions, please contact me here
"Elaine is an event dream. Her talk is full of humour and fun and welcomes creative interaction from the audience. The children were engaged throughout and Elaine’s book presents both factual and hilarious story-telling information in a fresh and dynamic way. Will Elaine’s books encourage new budding readers? Seeing children walk to school with their heads in Planet Stan – I’d say job done!"
Pat Freestone-Bayes, Regency Bookshop
"Many thanks indeed to Elaine Wickson, who visited our school to talk about her debut book ‘Planet Stan’. The children really enjoyed her visit and it was one of the most engaging author visits we have ever had. Her talk was fun, interesting and captured the children’s imaginations, as well as inspiring them to write. She would be very welcome to come back and speak about any future books."
Mr Henry Hamilton-Turner, Westbury House School
"The children of St. Paul's thoroughly enjoyed Elaine's visit and presentation. She had a wonderful way of engaging the children and her introduction to 'Planet Stan' was fun and fully interactive. Many of our children are now enjoying reading the book and are discussing the plot and characters with genuine enthusiasm."
Kathryn Hemming, St Paul’s C of E Primary School
Planet Stan Big Chart Chat (an assembly event for KS2)
An introduction to Planet Stan and Me - how I use charts to enhance Stan's story with examples from the book; and a look at my writing journey - an important lesson in not giving up - told with infographics, including the dreaded First Draft Pie Chart.
Pie Chart Quiz - guess the famous book characters using pie charts as you've never seen them before.
Day-Out-With-A-Bruv-Survival-Kit - interactive reading from the book with plenty of audience participation and dressing up.
Chart Attack - using oversized props and willing volunteers, we will explore infographics similar to those in the book (e.g. The Bar Chart of Disgusting Cakes, Lame Homework Excuses, Crazy Meteors Line Graph).
Creative Writing Workshops for KS2
I also offer three one-hour workshops for one class size each:
WORKSHOP # 1 - Stantastic Charts: Tell a story with infographics
A closer look at how Stan charts his life through infographics, featuring the most complicated Venn Diagram ever drawn (probably), Recipes for Disaster, and Bruv Bingo.
Use the Story Bingo card to make sure your stories have all the right elements, including a Planet-Stan-style fun infographic, e.g. the Venn diagram of superheroes and villains; a recipe for disaster at the museum; the bar chart of peril; or the pie chart of most disgusting cakes ever baked.
WORKSHOP #2 – Brillendous Words: Discovering the Portmanteau
Looking at portmanteau used in Planet Stan, and delving into the history behind blending words with Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky and Alice in Wonderland.
Class Team Challenge – Which Words Match? Discover portmanteau word origins as teams work together to see who can make the most pairs.
Make up your own blending words to use in a short piece of writing, e.g. a new creature that has just been discovered; a piece of trend-setting clothing; words to describe a swampy bog; or the ingredients for a witch's brew.
WORKSHOP #3 - Arty-Charts: Paper Plate Pie Charts & Venn Diagrams
(this workshop works well with Years 4 & 5)
A closer look at how Stan uses pie charts, including a Pie Chart Quiz of famous book characters.
Create an arty pie chart of your favourite things, using fractions to divide your paper plate. Then find out what you have in common with other friends as you work in pairs to make a Venn diagram.
PLUS - An opportunity to buy the book and get it signed!
It would be marvellous if schools could ensure pupils are aware of my author visit by sending home a letter to parents beforehand, and that copies of my book are available to buy on the day. Most schools use local bookshops, or books can be ordered from OUP on a sale-or-return basis.
Please contact me if you'd like to book an event, and for information on fees.
